Brain Plasticity

For centuries the scientific community believed that the human brain was fixed and the only change that would occur was after childhood, when the brain would start to decline as we moved toward old age.
Each section of the brain had a specific function and if damaged could not be replaced. The belief that the brain was fixed also led to the belief that human nature was also fixed.
Research carried out in the 1960’s and 1970’s began to change this belief. It was discovered that the brain changed its structure with each activity it performed: if an area of the brain was damaged then other parts could sometimes take over. This fundamental brain property was called “neuroplasticity.”
Thinking, learning and acting can shape our brain anatomy and our behaviour. It is my belief that this extraordinary discovery is the reason why we can all make profound change in any areas of our lives with the correct guidance.
